This position is part-time and works approximately 25 - 37.5 hours per week. Position works on a temporary basis.

Essential Functions


The temporary Marketing Communications Strategist works with the Marketing Communications team members in Admissions & Aid and throughout the undergraduate divisions to enhance Washington University’s brand awareness and reputation in key markets to drive inquiries, applications, and enrollments. The strategist is responsible for developing on-brand messaging by creating content for print materials and other strategic communications including, but not limited to, emails, website, social media, and digital advertising.


  1. Writing and Content Development: Write copy based on a strategic understanding of the brand narrative, tone, voice, and messaging. Generate ideas, researches, interviews, writes, edits, and proofreads.
  2. Project Management: Coordinate with the Director, Marketing Communications team, Production Manager, and Public Affairs to ensure that assigned projects are managed from conception to delivery and are completed on schedule and within budget. This includes routing and incorporating edits from a variety of stakeholders to ensure all materials meet needs and expectations. Work to ensure efforts are integrated and work collectively with the Marketing & Communications Team.
  3. Print Production: Oversee print projects from project specifications to understand the scope of the project, formulate print estimates (including bidding), schedule jobs, and proofread proofs through final delivery.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing or communication.
  • Proven experience in developing and facilitating creative communications, including keen eye and strong appreciation for the creative process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or a related field with five years of editing, copywriting, copy editing experience.
  • Experience working on integrated marketing campaigns or as part of integrated marketing teams.
  • Experience in writing for and managing the development of high-end, marketing print materials.
  • Experience in writing for digital platforms (web sites, blogs, e-newsletters, etc.).
  • Experience in creating and managing content for financial aid and/or special populations.
  • Working knowledge of InDesign in order to make simple file edits.
  • Exceptional strategic, critical thinking, and creative mindset.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Strong results orientation, timeliness, and follow through.
  • Exceptional judgment and discretion dealing with confidential information.
  • Ability to take university-wide perspective when making recommendations.

Salary Range

Base pay commensurate with experience.

Pre-Employment Screening

Current work is remote on university-provided laptop. If public health allows, may require attendance in office on WashU’s Danforth Campus.
