POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a key role in the Legal Department of Kemper Life reporting to the Division General Counsel, Life & Health. The role requires an experienced attorney with knowledge of the insurance industry and a proven record of successfully handling complex legal and compliance matters with significant financial and business impact. This person will possess strong judgment, work with an appropriate sense of urgency and provide proactive, business-focused counsel to the Life Division of Kemper.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide legal advice on all aspects of the life insurance business including the design, sale and administration of life and other insurance policies.

  • Provide proactive and timely legal counsel in support of strategic and tactical business initiatives.

  • Manage outside counsel in litigation and arbitration including managing budget, setting strategy, and working toward optimal resolutions for the Company.

  • Draft and review commercial contacts efficiently and under tight timelines.

  • Identify and mitigate risk to Company by providing relevant counsel and effective business-focused solutions.

  • Build and maintain expertise in state and federal insurance and privacy laws and regulations.

  • Support business partners in finding legally-compliant solutions to challenging business problems.

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with management and internal business clients, agents, outside counsel and Company partners to gain a deep understanding of the Company’s business, challenges, risks and opportunities.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from ABA-accredited institution and member in good standing of the Missouri Bar (or equivalent).

  • Four or more years of combined law firm and in-house legal experience with increasing levels of responsibilities.

  • Experience in insurance industry; life insurance a plus.

  • Experience interacting with state insurance regulators to resolve issues and meet company objectives.

  • Experience managing litigation and alternative dispute resolution methods including managing outside counsel, budgeting, and strategy setting.

  • Experience negotiating, drafting and reviewing commercial contracts.
