Job Summary:

Ensures KCS/KCSM locomotive overhaul capital projects are completed by coordinating with internal shops, third party contractors, and KCS Purchasing and Finance departments. Establishes KCS/KCSM locomotive overhaul work scope, budget, material needs, and on-time material delivery to internal and external shop locations in support of locomotive overhaul capital projects. Communicates and serves as a KCS/KCSM locomotive subject matter expert, ensuring the execution of the Locomotive and I.T. Department Locomotive Technology Roadmap. Oversees installation and maintenance schedules for the locomotive fleet onboard technology utilizing internal operational tools. Ensures level loaded locomotive inspection cycles and modification schedules are efficiently planned to reduce impacts to the locomotive repair facilities and asset dwell. Manages environmental (EPA) reporting of components changed out and the material life cycle management for the locomotive fleet. Responsible for the internal billing for mechanical costs across the divisions and KCSR/KCSM. Represent the company on the AAR Locomotive Repair Billing (LRB) Committee and participates in AAR “TAG” committees.

Conducts complex data analytics and modeling to ensure optimal locomotive performance. Develops business analytics and utilizes statistical methods to derive new insights and understanding of performance measures. Assesses trends and develops actionable insights and recommendations to management. Develops locomotive defect data mining and trend analysis, and organizes fleet remediation plans with internal shop locations and external locomotive manufacturers. Utilizes data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling, and fact-based management to drive decision making and future efficiencies.

Job Duties:

  • Manages KCS/KCSM locomotive overhaul planning, working with locomotive shops and KCS contracted third-party shops

  • Manages locomotive fleet defect data mining and reporting on defect trends across all fleets.

  • Advises senior management regarding locomotive fleet corrective action plans to ensure asset health of KCS/M locomotive fleet

  • Works in collaboration with KCS I.T. department to execute the Locomotive Technology Road Map

  • Manages the planning inspection cycle of the locomotive fleet to ensure fleet is level loaded and reduce shop dwell

  • Develops the schedule for all locomotive fleet environmental maintenance and level loading all regulatory (EPA) component change-outs

  • Manages locomotive fleet onboard technology (Trip Optimizer & Smart HPT) software installations and maintenance schedules to maximize return on investment

  • Manages onboard remote monitoring & LDVR technology (WI-Tronix & Railhead) and coordinates repair opportunities and new technology installations in U.S. & Mexico to maximize the company’s return on investment

  • Manages locomotive PTC (Positive Train Control) installation schedules with Transportation and Mechanical Departments to ensure regulatory (FRA) commitments are met

  • Performs locomotive blue card audits to ensure M60 inspections and air brake fragmentation is properly documented and to ensure the next inspections are set at the proper time intervals

  • Plans KCS/KCSM locomotive fleet modifications to maximize locomotive shopping events, reduce locomotive shop dwell and improve reliability

  • Prepares periodic material forecasts for emission critical components to support the material planning and budget planning cycles, based from scheduled inspections to reduce held for material events

  • Manages locomotive component warranty and supplier information for quality assurance reporting and vendor evaluation. Identifies component failure trends and correlation with sourcing of the components.

  • Manages all internal billing between KCSR/KCSM and the KCSR mechanical divisions, utilizing reports provided from division/shop leadership

  • Manages the labor warranty billing process for locomotive repairs made by KCS personnel to locomotives that are covered under a warranty to ensure KCS is properly reimbursed.

  • Represents KCS as the Locomotive Repair Billing (LRB) representative and any other AAR related committees or technical advisory groups (TAG) that have authority to change, eliminate, and improve processes or rules that govern locomotive repairs

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or related field

  • Five (5) years professional experience, preferably in a business, financial or analytical operations position

  • Two (2) years general railroad experience

  • Two (2) years managing project priorities

  • Two (2) years managing a billing process

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience working with SAP, LMS, MCS or WITRONIX

  • Experience working with INFOR, Business Objects, Power BI, or Sharepoint

  • Ability to meet deadline oriented tasks

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency with AAR Interchange Rules and Locomotive Repair Billing

  • Ability to collaborate at an industry level
