Our Statistics & Privacy team focuses on establishing step-change improvements to advance our long-term business growth. The team's expertise spans many domains including statistics, machine learning, economics, and cryptography. We develop methodologies, design and prototype solutions, and partner with our engineering colleagues to launch these solutions such that millions of advertisers can benefit.
We seek a Tech Lead Manager to support a team of Research Scientists in identifying new opportunities and helping build scientifically rigorous systems focused on enhancing technological guarantees for consumer privacy, while simultaneously expanding the efficiency of Facebook’s market-leading advertising optimization systems. Challenges include incorporating approaches such as differential privacy and multi-party computation within our ads delivery systems, designing machine learning systems on encrypted data and/or in decentralized or federated environments, and advancing the efficient frontier of privacy and utility in our ads systems.
Design and prototype new algorithms, optimization methods, and system architectures and get hands-on in implementation and development work of the projects
Lead highly skilled research scientists, providing mentorship and career guidance to members of the team
Foster innovation and prioritize across specific opportunities to build new and improve existing privacy-preserving advertising and commerce solutions
Shepherd the team’s research and development projects, ensuring high-quality communication across diverse audiences, and taking responsibility for the team’s long-term product impact
Build cross-functional relationships with AI, Engineering, Product and Analytics teams to shape long-term roadmaps with a balance of scientific rigor and strategic considerations
Manage the development of presentations, patent applications, white papers and publications of research results in top-tier journals and at leading conferences
PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or other quantitative fields, or MS/MA degree with 6+ years of relevant experience in research science
4+ years of industry experience in an applied research and development organization within relevant fields
2+ years of leadership experience for scientific teams
Understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical underpinning
Expertise with at least one of the following privacy technologies: Secure multi-party computation techniques, Differential privacy, Federated Learning, optimization algorithms and protocols, Learning on encrypted data, Homomorphic encryption, Trusted execution environments
Proficiency designing and implementing analytical and/or algorithmic solutions, tailored to particular business needs and tested on large data sets
Proficiency in Python
Experience with communicating analysis and establishing confidence among audiences who do not share your disciplinary background or training
Proven track record of innovation
2+ years of tech lead management experience in a highly technical and/or applied research team
Published as first-author(s) for top-tier conferences or journals in relevant fields
